WOW… we are so digital and receive so much of ‘Spam’ every day but when I tried to look for the basic information of all… ‘what are electronic data mailers’, I could not find a single blog post, article or any decent  information about it.
So ladies and gentlemen, this post of mine is dedicated to a digital marketer’s best friend EDMs, aka. Electronic Data Mailer, aka. Emailers, aka. Spam mail… :P

An Emailer is a simple mail sent out to more than one individual and generally but not necessarily promotes something or the other. They are used most popularly to sell or promote whatever the paying Brand Manager tell the digital marketing agency to do.
I created a few mailers for my Bro’s website and will be using the screen shots from the same to explain the simpler version of creating the mailers.
How to create the mailer:
Image > HTML mapping > Hosting

The task of creating the image is generally assigned to the highly paid (or not so highly paid but highly client billed individuals) to think of the best of the creatives to express a brand offering / offer / discount etc. to be communicated in a single image.

The creative guys use Adobe Photoshop or one of the many more so complex image creation solutions that even to open the basic of the Photoshop softwares gives you a headache. ‘Hats off’ to the guy / team who thought of so much of functionality for creating the simple images.

Here is a the short cut for creating the same :P
Use the power point or even paint to create the image that you want to promote:

Arrange the images in the manner that you feel is the best for expressing the purpose of the mailer in a single view.
Take a screen shot of the slide in the normal view of the presentation, something similar to the above image, as the presentation view distorts the image a bit. Paste the image in paint (helps in avoiding the distortion) and select the image that you require.  As a result what you get is the image of your mailer.

Copy the image and start the Photoshop (can’t help it… you do need the Photoshop for creating the image map) and select from the main menu file>> and new >>. It will automatically detect the image size from the clipboard (image that you have in copy) and create the new image pane of the appropriate size.

And divide the image in typically 4-6 parts. To slice, start from one of the corners of the image and create equal sized boxes, each starting from the corner of the other box till you complete cover the image with the boxes.
Again go to the main menu and select the following:

File >> Save for Web

The next window that opens up you need to change the optimized file format to JPEG (preferred for mailers), compression quality to maximum and check the progressive check box. Also open the image menu in the lower half of the page and put the width as 600 (again, preferred for mailers).
Click on save and …………. There you have it the HTML map for your mailer!!
However there are still a few things left before you can use the mailer. You need to host the images the images on you web server and update the link in the HTML file. And you need to update the following in the  coding: the link of the landing page as well as the alternate text for the images.

And there you have it…. your mailer is ready to go out in the market!!

Mobile Subscribers Added in March ‘09

Indian Telecom Operators Banked a WHOOPING 15.6 million subscribers in March ‘09. Surprisingly this comes in continuation to a series of record additions over past few months

  • 10.8 million subscribers in December ‘08
  • 15.4 million subscribers in January ‘09
  • 13.4 million subscribers in February ‘09

Much of the growth in the Q4 08-09 is being credited to Reliance entrance in GSM services and to regional operators spreading their wings with national licences. Reliance GSM notched up of 11.3 million mobile subscribers in the January-March quarter period (creating a world record in ‘the number of GSM subscribers added in a month’ – 5 million subscribers in January ‘09). Whereas Aircel recorded an addition of almost 1 million subscribers in the same duration.

Amazing Creative

Series of Fortunate Events!!

Though I could not understand the language used on the site… in my defence I am a ’sales guy’ (understand nothing comment on everything) but still the way the flash has been used on the site is amazing and really captures you for those few seconds.

Orkut reigned as the most visited social networking site in December 2008 with more than 12.8 million visitors, an increase of 81 percent from the previous year. Orkut’s audience was three times the size of its nearest competitor in the category. The gorwth that never happened!!

I wonder what are the reviews of advertising growth in 2008!!

Following is one of the few numbers that I keep on quoting in my PPTs. But to be very honest these numbers never happened, or at least it went completely down hill by the end of the year 2008.

“According to the latest Pitch-Madison Advertising Outlook report, the electronics media industry will grow at 22 per cent in 2008, which will be a 3 percentage points more than the growth it achieved in 2007.

Advertising Market Stats/Projections:

  • The overall advertising and media industry is expected to close at Rs 21,314 crore in revenues in 2008, riding a 20 per cent growth rate
  • Television advertising market is projected at Rs 8,674 crore in 2008
  • The print industry stands at nearly Rs 10,000 crore.
  • The cinema medium will corner around 0.7 per cent of the total advertising budget in 2008.
  • Outdoor media industry will grow at 14 per cent to touch Rs 1,454 crore,
  • Radio is likely to record a 40 per cent growth in 2008 to touch Rs 672 crore
  • Internet advertising will constitute only 1.7 per cent of the overall advertising spends in 2008, up from the current 1.4 per cent”

Though it does’nt seems so but still i hope 2009-2010 will have more confident brands with bigger Advertising spends.

Why the hell “Digital Marketing” ??

I have been part Mobile specific marketing for past 3 years (I know it’s not much but still…) and have always come across quite a few interesting numbers which I have always found useful for presentations and as discussion points with my colleagues and with my clients (yup I try to mug the numbers and sound intelligent that I understand them…. ;) ), but have lacked a way to organize them. I tried bookmarking them, tried creating excel sheets with specific tags and links for each of the topics and so much so, even tried saving them as complete web pages, but still ended up in top class mess of ‘what is where’ types. So in the end decided why not start a blog that will not only help me in organizing them for later but also referring them to others as well as getting some $$monies$$ by doing so and thus the blog ‘Digital Marketing’.

So if you feel that my blog helped you in getting some information, do write a comment, but most importantly do remember to click on at least one Ad….:).
